The Three Village Central School District paid tribute to Patriot Day on Sept. 11 in a series of important lessons and observances.

In social studies classes at the secondary level, students learned about the tragic events of 9/11. Marking 23 years since the attacks, classes aimed to emphasize the importance of remembrance and memorialization, while also highlighting the strength of humanity and the spirit of service. Many teachers utilized a webinar from the 9/11 Memorial and Museum which included personal stories from a member of the FDNY, a 9/11 family member and a New York City waterway boat captain. The webinar also featured filmmakers Jules and Gédéon Naudet, who were documenting the FDNY on Sept. 11, 2001, and captured footage inside the North Tower throughout the morning.

As a symbol of solidarity and remembrance, Ward Melville High School displayed American flags along Old Town Road. Additionally, several elementary schools, including Minnesauke and Nassakeag, placed flags on the front lawns of their buildings. Across the district, students wore red, white and blue to acknowledge Patriot Day.

Through these lessons and activities, students were educated about the events, fostered an understanding of hope and resilience and paid tribute to the victims and heroes.
