Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Athletics FAQ

Q: Will there be a spring sports season for Varsity, Junior Varsity, or Junior High School students?

A: As of April 21, Section XI has cancelled the spring sports season for all levels (varsity, junior varsity, and junior high schools). Each quarter is now 50% of the grade.

Section XI’s statement: “After much discussion and consideration, the Athletic Council has voted unanimously to cancel the spring sports season for 2020 at all levels. This decision was made in the best interest of the health and safety of all of our student athletes, staff and communities. The decision was not an easy one to make, however, in what the world is experiencing at this time, it is the most prudent decision to make.” Coaches will follow up with their student athletes regarding end-of-year information, meetings, and equipment at a later time.

Q: Are the locker rooms open for students to gather any belongings left from the last day school was in session?

A: At this time, all schools have been disinfected and cleaned. Schools are closed to all students, parents, and visitors to maintain social distancing and prevent contamination of disinfected areas.

Q: Will Spring Community Swim resume and will the missed days be made up?

A: Once schools are open and we are back in session, we will evaluate if the Spring Swim Program can continue and what is the best feasible way to make up the missed days for families.

Q: When will registration for our summer recreation camps, travel camp, community swim, Patriot Pride Sports camp and driver’s education begin?

A: We are currently postponing registration for all summer programs until schools are back in session and we know it will be safe to operate these programs. Once we have this information, we will send announcements home regarding registration dates and procedures for these programs.

Q: How does the school closure impact current spring driver’s education students?

A: Our current spring driver’s education students only have about 25% of their classroom and driving time complete. NYS Education Department is allowing distance learning (for only classroom hours) if they have 75% of the hours completed. Unfortunately, our students only have 25% complete at this point. For students to complete the course and earn their certificate, they must complete their remaining hours in class and in the car. Once school is back in session, we will reschedule these missed classes and do our best to complete the course by the end of the school year. But, this all depends on when school resumes. The class may have to extend into the summer.

Q: Will the District still host the annual Day to Shine and elementary field day events?

A: These future events are currently on hold and we do not have enough information yet to determine if they will run, be postponed, or cancelled. Once school is back in session and we have better information, we will make decisions that are in the best interest of our students and staff health and safety.

Q: Will the Senior College Athletic Recognition Ceremony and Senior Athletic Dinner still take place?

A: These future events are currently on hold and we do not have enough information yet to determine if they will run, be postponed, or cancelled. Once school is back in session and we have better information, we will make decisions that are in the best interest of our students and staff health and safety.
