Teaming Up for Equality

A team of student activists from P.J. Gelinas, R.C. Murphy and Ward Melville High School worked to bring positive change to the world as they took part in the 2019 ERASE Racism Long Island Leaders of Tomorrow Conference at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue.

The Three Village students joined with more than 80 of their peers from throughout Suffolk County to tackle issues of racial equity and justice. ERASE Racism Student Task Force members led a panel discussion about the opportunities they've had to advocate for racial equity and inclusive learning through their participation in the task force. Then, all participated in a question and answer session and spent the afternoon in a series of intensive workshops, where they developed strategic action plans to guide them in implementing the changes they wanted to see. The event culminated with a Gallery Walk, where students were able to view each group's action plan.

According to ERASE Racism, “The conference was devoted to educating students on racism and giving students a voice to express themselves so that they could begin the process of initiating change.”
