P.J. Gelinas Junior High School student Ziya Yin was named a second-place winner in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association 2024 Student Poetry Contest for her piece, “They Call Her Liberty.”

The theme of this year’s contest was Walt Whitman’s poem, “Song of the Open Road.” Students were challenged to use their poetic voice and Whitman’s literary device of free verse to explain their own “road,” or journey, in 30 lines or less. Yin was invited to the award ceremony at the Walt Whitman Birthplace on May 5.
