The Ward Melville High School Science Olympiad team has advanced to the state tournament after its outstanding achievement at the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament. Ward Melville High School ranked first, earning the team a ticket to compete against schools from across New York.

The Eastern Long Island Regional is the largest regional tournament in the nation, boasting 60 teams from across Suffolk County. Out of the 22 Science Olympiad events ranging from engineering to biology, the team earned first in 14 events.

In addition to the team’s win, Ward Melville High School coaches Jenny Serigano and Mark Suesser were awarded the Outstanding Service Award at the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament. The award was given in recognition of not only the coaches’ dedication to their own team, but their instrumental roles in helping run the regional tournament. Both coaches have taken on the role of lead supervisors for events, contributing supplies and providing invaluable guidance to all students in the region. For their team members, the two coaches have gone above and beyond to create a welcoming environment. Ms. Serigano and Mr. Suesser’s guidance and technical knowledge have been the backbone of the team’s success, including qualifying consecutively for the national tournament in the last two years.

The state tournament will take place at Le Moyne College from March 15–16. The district wishes the Ward Melville team the best of luck.
