Students in the drones and aeronautics class at Ward Melville High School took advantage of the beautiful fall weather to start recording aerial video footage of the school.
Prior to flying, students needed to analyze aviation weather reports, check the airspace and file a flight plan. By working in teams, students will produce a high-quality cinematic tour of the campus to be displayed in the halls of the school. Next, they will be utilizing the aircraft to capture imagery for photogrammetry and mapping.
All the students in the class have passed the Federal Aviation Administration's required Recreational UAS Safety Test and are continuing to study the material that would be required for the next step, the FAA part 107 remote pilot certification.
This activity showcases how the skills students are learning in class could be used for careers or business opportunities in the future.
