Two junior high school students were honored in the 2023 Walt Whitman Poetry Contest. Amartya Das, an eighth grader at R.C. Murphy Junior High School, and Allie Harrison, an eighth grader at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, both were named winners for their individual poems in the grades 7-8 category. Das’ poem was, “Endless Flow,” and Harrison’s was, “My Knot of Life.”

This year’s theme of the annual Walt Whitman Poetry Contest was “I am large… I contain multitudes,” from Whitman’s poem, “Song of Myself.” Students were challenged to use their poetic voice to share the multitudes within themselves in 30 lines or less. Das and Harrison are invited to an award ceremony at the Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum later this month.
