Arrowhead Elementary School second graders in Lorin Herrmann’s class learned the importance of the “three Rs” ahead of Earth Day – reduce, reuse and recycle. The class read an article called “Junk Art” and worked together in a hands-on activity to beautify the school grounds as well as make a positive impact on the environment.

Ms. Herrmann gathered old sweaters and cut them into squares. Students then patched them together to make a quilt. They applied what they learned in their recent measurement unit to find the circumference of a tree and made a colorful tree sweater. The collaborative effort showed students how “junk” can become art, all while helping the planet and bringing attention to the importance of trees.
