Local leaders gathered at Ward Melville High School in the Three Village Central School District on April 13 to honor several achievements. New York State Senator Anthony Palumbo, State Senator Mario Mattera and a representative from State Assemblyman Ed Flood’s office presented resolutions and proclamations to deserving students and staff.

The ceremony began by celebrating a number of student-athletes. The Ward Melville High School girls varsity soccer team was recognized first for winning the New York State championship earlier this year. The state senators passed a resolution to acknowledge the team’s win and noted that the team will forever be part of New York State history. Additionally, the varsity football team was presented with certificates for winning the Suffolk County championship.

The next recognition honored Ward Melville High School for being named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Principal William Bernhard accepted a State of New York Legislative Resolution from the local leaders on behalf of the high school community.

Senator Palumbo presented senior Robert Looney with a certificate of recognition for enlisting in the United States Marine Corps after graduation. Senator Palumbo thanked Looney for his commitment to the nation.

The final recognition of the celebration honored 10th grader Ella Ignacio. Ignacio resides at Angela’s House and became a published illustrator when she drew pictures for the book, “Do Skunks Think Skunks Stink?” The book was written by her nurse Tracy Bloom and her son many years ago. After the illustrations were complete, the books were sold as a fundraiser for Angela’s House.
