The Board of Education recently honored several students and volunteers for their academic, artistic and altruistic successes.

Students in Carol Nickerson’s community-based vocational program were celebrated for the work they have done within the school community. The students have been working hard to learn various skills and have dedicated time to beautifying the school’s 9/11 garden, weeding and planting the area.

A project that has been a labor of love for school library media specialist Nicole Connelly and the entire P.J. Gelinas Junior High School community was unveiled during the Board’s meeting in early May. With the support of students, families and staff, Ms. Connelly has been working since 2014 to develop an inviting space for all to enjoy by creating an outdoor courtyard in the hopes of inspiring creativity and learning. Over the years, the school has cleaned up the space, arranged plantings and secured funding for outdoor furniture. Recently, the project was finished with the restoration of the garden pond through generous donations of materials and time from Sound Shore Pond of Wading River. Ms. Connelly and Al Schule from the pond company were celebrated by the Board.

Lastly, PTA Reflections contest winners from Setauket Elementary School, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, R.C. Murphy Junior High School and Ward Melville High School were celebrated for their creative and award-winning submissions. The following students were among those honored during the meeting:
