P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy Junior High School Science Olympiad teams captured first- and second-place wins, respectively, at the virtually run New York State Science Olympiad competition this April and, as such, have qualified to compete in the National Science Olympiad Tournament.

During the state event, the teams competed against 52 of the best teams from throughout New York and demonstrated their understanding of myriad science topics and concepts. Earlier this year, the teams also competed in the Eastern Long Island Regional Tournament and several invitational competitions that were held virtually from other states, including California, Florida, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The national competition will be held virtually from Arizona State University, in observation of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, even though the competition is virtual this year, there will be a weeklong schedule of events beginning on May 17 leading up to the competition on May 22 for students to participate in.
