A Slam Dunk for Charity

Ward Melville’s boys basketball program recently initiated a community service project aimed at sending care packages to servicemen and women stationed overseas.

The students sold silicone bracelets to raise money and used the collected monetary contributions to buy an array of items for the soldiers. Fittingly named “Operation Care Package,” the team members, their families and coach Piccirillo created more than 160 care packages filled with protein powder, hot sauce, gum, personal hygiene products, personal messages from students throughout the Three Village School District and much more.

The district commends the following students who worked selflessly to develop this project:

Hundreds of Three Village students were praised for their charitable actions and presented with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award this past June. The national award is given to individuals in honor of service hours accumulated during a 12-month period. According to the official criteria, the awards are offered in multiple levels and are designed to recognize each milestone of service. Levels include bronze, silver, gold and the highest honor, the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, for those who contribute more than 4,000 hours of service in their lifetime.
