The district’s elementary schools teamed up to compete in a Waste Free Day challenge in celebration of Earth Day.

The schools worked to reduce the amount of waste collected during each of the school’s lunch periods. Students and staff were encouraged to bring lunch in reusable containers and limit the amount of utensils and paper goods used during the mealtime.

The winner of the first ever challenge was Arrowhead Elementary School, which reduced its overall garbage waste my 50 percent or three large garbage pails. As a result, the school was presented with a commemorative trophy and Principal Marisa Redden sported a green wig and cape the following school day.

Special thanks to Dr. Mandel's art class from R.C. Murphy Junior High School for crafting the trophy, which was made from recycled materials.
