District Receives 2010 Best Practices Award

Through the efforts of Director of Child Nutrition, Jean Ecker, the District has been named the Grand Prize winner of the 2010 Best Practices Award from the NYS Office of General Services. For this honor, the Office of General Services will be presenting the District with a $5,000 check, along with a commemorative plaque at an awards ceremony in October.

The award recognizes the District for:

  • Focusing on three main areas: student customers, food service workers, and the government commodity program.
  • Taking into consideration student preferences: the District streamlined the menus for all schools, including the second option at the junior high schools, which focuses on healthy choices for students such as white meat chicken nuggets and recipes with whole muscle chicken breast.
  • Changing menus and purchasing practices to take advantage of fresh fruits and vegetables available from the government and vendors.
  • Coordinating the menus between the elementary and secondary schools, which allowed food service workers time to create healthy recipes for the students.
  • Increasing breakfast participation by 100% by improving breakfast choices and offering breakfast earlier in the day.
  • Increasing the average daily lunch participation rate by 123 lunches per day.

Congratulations to Ms. Ecker and the entire food service team for their efforts and for receiving this award.
