Student-writers at R.C. Murphy Junior High School are often inspired to pen remarkable literary pieces in and out of the classroom, and this winter some of those pieces garnered several authors national and regional awards.

Two students won national honors in the Scholastic Art & Writing Competition as a result of their original pieces. Earning National Silver Medals for Writing, which ranks them among the top 1 percent in the country, were ninth-graders Jennifer Cabrera and Kate Glenn for their Flash Fiction submissions.

Additionally, several students were honored in the Walt Whitman Birthplace Student Poetry Contest, a competition that drew hundreds of submissions from across Long Island. One student from each age category won Grand Champion and three were selected from each category as a winner. Murphy eighth-grader Kate Sun was named the Grand Champion in the grade 7-8 category; ninth-grader Sally Gliganic was named the Grand Champion in the grade 9-10 category and eighth-grader Natalie Dreyer was named the winner in the grade 7-8 category.
