In preparation for the launch of their new nonfiction unit of study, fourth-graders at Arrowhead Elementary School took part in two interesting and interactive activities within their classrooms.

As they dove into the unit, the students’ classrooms were transformed into “emergency rooms” to provide them the chance to conduct “text feature surgery.” Dressed in hair caps, face masks and aprons, the students operated on different magazines to find helpful nonfiction text features. Once identified, they collected the pieces and worked to determine their purpose.

The following class, the rooms were once again transformed – this time into a Book Café. During the event, students “tasted” a variety of nonfiction books and topics, sampling them to determine if they’d like to read them during their nonfiction unit. They completed menu cards, describing what their impressions of the book were and if they would add the piece to their must-read lists.
