During the mid-April Board of Education meeting, the district honored and celebrated several students’ successes. Below is a brief overview of those who were honored.

Nassakeag Elementary School third-grader and master chess player Kevin Duong was commended for being named a 2018 New York State Scholastic chess co-champion. Kevin will now compete in the 2018 Pan America Youth Chess championship this July in Santiago, Chile, with all his expenses paid. 

Seven Ward Melville High School seniors were commended for being named National Merit Scholarship finalists, an honor bestowed based upon a student’s PSAT scores and a comprehensive application process. 

Seniors Emily Huang and Michael Lu were celebrated for being named 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search semifinalists. The students entered this competition based on their independent and cutting-edge research projects.

To end the evening, the members of the Ward Melville High School boys swimming and diving team were honored for earning team and individual state championships, being named county and league runners-up as well as capturing several new school records this past season.
