Three R.C. Murphy Junior High School students – Shahzadi Adeena, Alana John and Claire Yang – have earned national recognition in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. Shahzadi earned a gold medal for her “A Spectrum of Blue” poem, Alana earned a silver medal for her “Words of the Refuse” poem and Claire earned a silver medal for her flash fiction piece, “Peach.”

These students have been identified by panels of creative professionals as the most talented young artists and writers in the nation. Of the 350,000 pieces of writing and art submitted, only 3,259 won national medals, which represent the top 1 percent of the work submitted.

As a gold medalist, Shahzadi, her parents and Murphy English Chairperson Catherine Duffy will travel to Carnegie Hall on June 7, where she will receive her gold medal at a national ceremony. Marc Brown, alum and author of the “Arthur” series, will be the keynote speaker.
