A Presidential Study
As part of their social studies unit on government, W.S. Mount fifth-graders in Janet Von Bargen’s class learned about many of the nation’s leaders during a recent research project on presidents.
The students chose a president to research and created a scrapbook of pictures and mementos their president might have saved. They also created a Time magazine cover that their president might have appeared on and a newspaper front page highlighting an important event during his presidency.
Additionally, using what they learned about their president's talents, interests, education and background, each student decided what kind of teacher their president might have been. They then created a figure representing the teacher president, using caricatures of their faces and appropriate "clothing" and props.
