R.C. Murphy Junior High School seventh-graders Matthew Chen and Alana John were named the first and second place winners, respectively, in the 2017 Long Island Language Arts Council Kenneth F. Gambone Writing Contest.

Both students will be honored at a celebratory luncheon later this month, where they will receive their awards and have the opportunity to hear from featured presenter, veteran songwriter, poet and teacher Alan Semerdjian.

Matthew’s winning piece is titled “When the War Came to Us” and told the story of a small town in Poland that was invaded by the Germans. Alana’s piece was untitled and followed the theme of two sisters who reunited in Japan. Both students completed their award-winning submissions with the help of their English teacher, Bev Gilmore.
