Advancing to Tournament of Champions
Two junior high school math teams from the district earned first and second-place during this year’s Suffolk County MoMathlon held at Brookhaven National Laboratory and have qualified to compete in the tournament of champions at the MoMath museum in New York City.
The Museum of Mathematics, together with supporters Con Edison and Brookhaven National Laboratory, provide New York students the opportunity to participate in several middle school math tournaments throughout the state, culminating in a thrilling tournament of champions.
R.C. Murphy Junior High School and Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School each had a team compete against more than 25 schools in Suffolk County with the top two schools advancing to the Tournament of Champions. Gelinas team members Ivan Ge, Alexander Lin, Robin Xiong, Nancy Zhong, Julia Zhu, took the first-place prize and Murphy team members Claire Yang, Matthew Chen, Animesh Ghose, Neil Mehta, and Jessica Liao, took the second-place prize. Claire Yang also was the seventh grade individual winner of the tournament with Alexander Lin, Robin Xiong and Ivan Ge taking second, third and fourth.
