R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s ninth-grade Bay Scallop Bowl Team showcased their expansive knowledge during this year’s regional competition sponsored by the National Ocean Science Bowl and held at Stony Brook University.

During the event, the students competed against 16 teams from across Long Island during several challenging rounds, including a round robin format and jeopardy style buzzer format. Questions throughout the contest covered all aspects of the subject of oceanography, such as the type of technology used to study the oceans, as well as the biological, chemical and geological aspects of oceanography.  The questions also covered national organizations and political treaties relating to global and national ocean issues.

The overall goal of the event was to encourage students to pursue an interest  in oceanography and focus on careers that will affect the oceans.
