Gelinas Speller Heads to National Bee
P.J. Gelinas Junior High School seventh-grader Ryan Himmelsbach accomplished something that he has worked toward for the past three years – being crowned the top Long Island spelling champion.

Ryan, a three-time school spelling bee champion, went head-to-head with the region’s top 47 spellers during the Long Island Spelling Bee at Hofstra University. After a challenging 11 rounds in three hours, Ryan ultimately captured the top place with the word “requiem.”

As Long Island champion, Ryan will now compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland from May 28-June 3. The winner of this contest will win a $40,000 prize.
