Celebrating Scholarly Achievements
At its early June meeting, the district’s Board of Education and administration honored and celebrated several prestigious academic honors bestowed upon Three Village students this spring.
Ward Melville High School’s, P.J. Gelinas Junior High School and R.C. Murphy Junior High School’s Science Olympiad teams and their coaches were praised for numerous awards they amassed this competition season. In their respective divisions, Ward Melville completed the year ranked 24th in the nation, second in the New York State and first in the Eastern Long Island Region; Gelinas finished the year ranked 10th in the nation and first both in New York State and the Eastern Long Island Region; Murphy was ranked fourth in the state and second in the Eastern Long Island Region. All teams earned numerous medals at each of the contests they participated in this year.
P.J. Gelinas Junior High School scholars David Futcher, William Sun and Justin Zhang achieved honorable mention status in the DuPont Challenge, a science essay competition that calls for students to express ways to keep the global population supplied with food, safety and clean energy.
Rounding out the night of celebrations were two young students who have made a national name for themselves in the history competition circuit. W.S. Mount Elementary School students Neal Carpino and Matthew Chen were celebrated for advancing to compete in the National History Bee and scoring in the top eight in the elementary division of the Regional Finals.
