P.J. Gelinas Junior High School ninth-grade honors theory students participated in the Mathematical Association of America’s national American Mathematic Competition 10 contest and one student made school history with his results.

The AMC 10 is the first in a series of examinations culminating in the International Math Olympiad. For the first time in school history, a student at Gelinas scored well enough to be invited to take the next level of the exam. This spring, William Sun participated in the three-hour, 15-question American Invitational Mathematics Examination and his result on this exam are still pending.

According to the association’s website, students across the country have taken up the challenge of America’s longest-running and most prestigious math contests, the AMC, for more than 60 years. Every year, at thousands of schools in every state, more than 350,000 students are presented with a set of questions rich in content, designed to make them think and leave them talking about mathematics.
