The Ward Melville High School literary magazine, Cinnabar, advised by Lisa Rochford, received the highest award in the 2015 National Council of Teachers of English Excellence in Student Literary Magazines contest. It received the highest recognition in New York State.

The magazine’s 2015 edition, “Attic,” was judged against 355 entries submitted nationwide. Only 24 publications received the highest award.

According to its website, the NCTE’s Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines recognizes students, teachers and schools for producing excellent literary magazines. PRESLM’s mission is to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines and seek excellence in writing and schoolwide participation in production. Participation in the program serves as an incentive for improving the quality of school literary magazines. Judges evaluate and rank middle school, junior high and high school literary magazines. Critiques of individual magazines are not provided.
